Interactive family tree

2021

Programs used

This project was created in cooperation with the zoological museum of the University of Zurich.

With the renovation of the museum, a new space is created which is dedicated to the human evolution. In this space, the museum wants to emphasize that knowledge is dynamic. The human family tree (phylogenetic tree) evolves with time and changes with new discoveries.

To visualize this change in knowledge I created a concept for an interactive family tree. Users learns how the state of research and thus the human family tree has developed over the years. They can decide what year they want to have a closer look at and they are shown the family tree from this specific year. They receive further information on the state of knowledge at this time as well as visualizations from this time.

This interactive family tree could be showcased on a fixed large touchscreen, on mobile devices or even be implemented in VR.

Process - First sketches and broad ideas

Narrowed down idea of creating an interactive family tree

Animated sketches of the interactive family tree and how “uncertainty” in the state of knowledge could be visualized

Final concept as an animation

Further ideas, how the concept could be improved in the future

How the interactive family tree could look in action
